Information and communications Technology (ICT) is used in reference to television, the internet, e mail, and mobile phones, CD-ROMs, hand-held personal devices, computers and many more.
ICT has changed the way people communicate, learn and conduct businesses. It can help in learning. For example, recording devices can help students who process information slowly to record their lesson and replay them for further retention. Computer programs can help students overcome speech impediments and reading programs can play audio recording of books to people who are visually impaired.
ICT enables information and knowledge to travel fast and far.
ICT is, and will continue to be a catalyst in advancing economic growth and poverty reduction. New information technologies overcome the barriers of distance and time, and significantly improve the accessibility of
information and
knowledge. As a result, the sharing of information and knowledge quickly and effectively becomes feasible and acts as a key element in achieving development goals and mitigating the impacts of unforeseen events such as
natural disaster or outbreak of diseases. Distance education using ICT also offer potential learning opportunities to those previously excluded.
According to the United Nations, the importance of ICTs can not be over emphasized. Many countries around the world have established organizations for the promotion of ICTs in there domains.
ICT IN EDUCATION
ICT can support children as it offers opportunities to revise concepts and skills embedded in games-like situations. Content-rich software that offer tutorial, simulations and practice problems can be used effectively for the reinforcement or the revision f learning concepts.
ICT extends the range of classroom learning tools; it offers the teacher and the child. It affords the opportunity to select the experiences that begin with each child’s knowledge and experience, and are thus most meaningful to the child.
ICT extends the child’s immediate learning environment offering opportunity to push learning beyond the confines of the classroom.
ICT offers the child a motivational context for his or her engagement with content and thus serves as a powerful stimulus for the child’s talk about his or her learning experiences. When the child is given regular opportunities to discuss with peers and teachers what he or she knows and can do when using ICT, technology enhanced classrooms can provide a powerful catalyst for a child learning in the primary school.
ICT extends the range of opportunity for children’s creative expression by offering a variety of content-free software tools, such as multimedia and art and design software that support multiple method of constructing, exploring, and representing knowledge.
ADVANTAGES OF ICT
1. Information is available 24hrs a day through the internet.
2. Vast amount of data can be stored and processed quickly and efficiently.
3. Shopping, bank transaction and travel booking can all be done from a computer
4. Work can be done from home, as well as video conferencing and charting with people around the world.
5. Computer can be used to control automated processes in dangerous situation, thus protecting people.
6. Computer can assist disabled people to perform tasks they would not normally be able to do.
7. Computers are used to aid surgeon for operations, training and scanning for diagnoses.
DISADVANTAGES OF ICT
1. Often there is a loss of privacy with ICTs.
2. If there is computer hardware failure, a nation’s economy can be negatively
affected.
3. Computers enable photos to be edited to distort reality.
4. Work involving computers can come between the end user and other humans, creating a train on social relationships.
5. There are also dangers of internet use which the computer user is always exposed to, for example, fraud and scamming.
6. Because of access to the internet, children are exposed to what is not to be, for example pornography.
