WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PNG, JPG/JPEG, GIF, AND A BMP FILE?

I have seen a lot of people running into one issue or the other when it comes to image format to be used either manually on the computer or for online purposes. To be frank, what is available in one website as far as image format is concerned may be different from others. Really, the image format that supports in website A might not be the case for site B. To upload a picture, one must take into cognizance the image format needed so as not to have any problem.

 A JPG IMAGE

What I’m talking about is when it is mandatory for you to upload your picture maybe for email-stuff, online-registration or online-dating, online-banking etc. Have you ever wondered in one way or the other when you want to upload a file/image and you are being alerted that the image is not supported, too large or too small? Yes, that is one of the things I’m talking about here. As a result of this, in
this post, I’m going to talk about the difference between GIF, JPG/JPEG, PNG, and a BMP file. I’m going to analyze different types of image formats being used nowadays and the best time to use them to make your computing a lot easier. Let me talk about each of them one by one. I will start with PNG image/file format first.

PNG

The full meaning for this is “Portable Networks Graphic”. It is one of my best image formats I always use either for my graphic work or online purposes. I like PNG format for some reasons. One of the reasons is the ability of the image not to get a background if you save it in this format. It can be used for web purposes also as mentioned before. For instance, one can
use PNG format for web banner, logo, screen-shots and lots more.

BMP

BMP stands for bitmap. Unarguably, this is one of the old image formats that I have ever known as far as image/file format is concerned. When it comes to image saving default for computer some years back, you will talk of BMP.  If not for nowadays that new versions of windows are coming up, some of the image format in computing are in BMP format. For example, in Windows XP, you will notice that the earlier version of this windows used .bmp a lot as default, but, thanks to the new innovation in technology now. Moreover, it is not advisable to save your web image/file in BMP format because of its size nature.

GIF

This stands for “Graphics Interchange Format”. Actually, GIF format is best used for text, line drawings, screen shots, cartoons, and animations. If you want a fast loading page, the image format you suppose to use is GIF. GIF is of 256 colors or less. It is commonly used for fast loading web pages. It also makes a great banner or logo for your webpage. Animated pictures are also saved in GIF format. GIF doesn’t take much size, and as a result it is good for manual or web activities.

JPG, JPEG

This stands for “Joint Photographic Experts Group” Jpeg format is used for color photographs, or any pictures with many blends or gradients. It is not good with sharp edges and tends to blur them a bit. Actually this image/file format became so so popular with the invention of digital camera. This format became popular with the invention of the digital camera some years back. Nearly all the digital camera download photos to the computer as a JPEG/JPG file. JPEG format can be used for online purposes too. If the image is too big, it can be resized manually. With this explanation, i want to believe you have learnt something. Besides, it is now up to you to choose the image format you will like to use and the best time or way to use them
